WHAT IS A BANGER RALLY?

A banger rally is a rally in a scrap or low value car on public tar & dirt roads. The event is a non-racing variant of banger racing. A banger rally may also be a charity rally where the teams taking part in the event also raise money for charity.

Banger rallies chiefly appear to be a United Kingdom-based phenomenon and most involve driving through Europe to various destinations where the cars are environmentally scrapped, sold or auctioned for charity. Some events have a limit on how much a participant can spend on buying a car or the size of the engine. Participants in the events often decorate their vehicles with the stickers of sponsors or customising to a theme from popular culture.

CBR MIDLANDS BANGER RALLY RULES:

THE CAR: Let’s be honest, this isn’t the Monaco Grand Prix. We’re looking for a little style, a little flair, and a lot of character. Your car must be registered in 1990 or older, 2-wheel drive is fine (although a raised suspension wouldn’t hurt!). And don’t even think about bringing a fancy, big engine performance car – we’re not impressed. The total budget cap is R100,000, which includes everything from purchase price and paint work to decals and new tires. Oh, and don’t forget the mandatory fire extinguisher! So dust off the old banger in the back yard…

THE PEOPLE: We’re not looking for uptight, high-strung types here. If you can’t handle a little roughing it, then this isn’t the rally for you. We want fun-loving, adventurous people who aren’t afraid to get a little dirty. 2 people per entry (you can increase to max 4 at additional cost) looney people per entry, please. We’ve got enough craziness as it is.

THE “GEES”: Let’s see some spirit, people! Decorate your vehicle and theme your team, the wilder the better. Just keep it clean – nothing political, religious, or offensive. When in doubt, consult the organizers. And remember, the goal is to have fun and make memories that’ll last a lifetime.

THE COMPETITION: We’re not looking to break any world records here. The challenges will be limited to in-car and the occasional out-of-car challenge, but nothing too strenuous or serious. Can you do the best dirt donut? Can you hit a target? Let’s find out.

BUCKUP SUPPORT: Look, we’re not your mom. If something goes wrong with your car, you’re probably on your own to fix it. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back – sort of. There will be one support vehicle and a trailer to transport you to the closest town if required. From there, you’re on your own. Good luck!

CHARITY: Hey, we’re not just about having fun. We’re also about giving back. The event will support the Hero Burn Foundation, which does amazing work promoting burn awareness education and initiatives, improving burn care through research and education, and supporting burn survivors and their families. You can raise funds for the foundation on your own, or you can just sit back and let our resident Cannonball Run Highway Idiots on Patrol (CHiPs) fine you for every infraction they can come up with.

FOOD: Look, we’re not promising a gourmet feast here. But we will provide all your meals, which will be protein-heavy (hey, you’re burning a lot of calories driving around all day). Vegetarians and vegans, there are a few prickly pears along the route. Feel free to help yourself (ok ok… there might be salads)!

Starts Thursday morning with Thursday & Friday out at undisclosed destinations with the end back at Notties Hotel with prize giving dinner at Notties Hotel on the Saturday night

Accommodation

Multiple accommodation options are available from a combination of hotel rooms (Nottingham Road only), camping, glamping & chalets or a combination.

Option 1 – Event with Chalet accommodation Thursday & Friday night only. 4 dinners & 3 lunches 

Option 2 – Event with dorm room (bunk beds with fitted sheet, bring own sleeping bag/blanket & pillow & shared ablutions) & glamping tent accommodation. Thursday & Friday night only. 4 dinners & 3 lunches
